Malachi
The Last ProphetThe final Old Testament prophet who rebuked spiritual apathy and prophesied the coming messenger before the Day of the LORD
Malachi was the last Old Testament prophet, ministering about 100 years after the temple was rebuilt. He confronted a spiritually apathetic people who offered blemished sacrifices, divorced their wives, and robbed God of tithes. His book closes with a promise of Elijah's return before the Day of the LORD - fulfilled in John the Baptist. After Malachi, 400 years of prophetic silence followed until John's voice in the wilderness. Malachi's prophecy of God's messenger 'preparing the way' (3:1) is quoted at the beginning of Mark's Gospel.
Original Name
מַלְאָכִי (Malakhi)
Meaning
My messenger
Etymology
Malachi comes from 'malakh' (messenger, angel) with the possessive suffix 'i' (my), meaning 'My messenger.' Some scholars debate whether this is a personal name or a title, since 3:1 uses the same word: 'I will send my messenger (malakhi).'
Linguistic Insights
Malachi's name ('My messenger') appears in his own prophecy - 'I will send my messenger (malakhi)' (3:1), creating a wordplay where the prophet himself embodies his message. The book uses a distinctive dialogue format: God makes a statement, the people question it ('How have we...?'), and God responds. This disputational style appears 23 times, revealing Israel's spiritual blindness. The 'Sun of Righteousness' (shemesh tsedaqah - שֶׁמֶשׁ צְדָקָה) with healing in its wings (kenapheyim - wings/rays) is a beautiful Messianic image. Malachi's final word is 'curse' (cherem), leaving the Old Testament awaiting redemption - the New Testament opens with grace.
Translation Notes
- •Name means 'My messenger' - same word used in 3:1
- •Possibly a title rather than personal name
- •Uses unique disputational dialogue format
- •OT ends with 'curse' (cherem) - NT opens with grace
